Why You Need To Start Employee Recognition Programs – And How To Go About It

An organization’s capacity to keep employees significantly affects its financial performance, since the expenses associated with recruiting and training new hires are substantially higher than the cost of retaining existing employees. As such, businesses today are racing to prevent employee departure, frantically looking for ways to slow down the increasing turnover rates that have been happening in recent years.

According to Gallagher's 2023 U.S. Organizational Wellbeing Report, which gathers data from more than 4,000 organizations nationwide, over half of the employers have reported a turnover rate of at least 15% in 2022. With this, the focus of many organizations for 2023 lies heavily on employee experience, with employers placing a significant emphasis on improving rewards and benefits.

Almost 80% of employers have increased the base salaries of their existing employees, while another 40% have boosted performance-based compensation. Additionally, about 40% of businesses stepped up to enrich medical benefits or enhance their health and wellness programs, reflecting a 6% increase from the previous year.

But while these measures are aimed at enticing employees to stay, many companies overlook a critical yet basic human need: acknowledgment. Employers must note that the demographic composition of the workforce and the requirements of employees are rapidly changing along with the times, and the pressure is on to devise more creative and engaging campaigns to improve the holistic employee experience.

Benefits of Prioritizing Employee Recognition

At its essence, corporate cultures prioritizing acknowledgment foster an atmosphere where employees receive genuine, consistent gratitude, praise, and appreciation. This environment ensures that employees feel valued, that their work has an impact, and that each individual's contributions are recognized and appreciated equitably.

Showing your employees that you value them and what they do for the company makes them feel good about themselves and their work environment, leading to increased productivity and positive attitudes toward their jobs. Thus, recognition is a simple way to boost employee performance, engagement, and retention, making it an essential part of your company culture.

Recognition can also help improve teamwork, collaboration, and morale within the organization. For example, if an employee has been nominated for an award by their peers or management, they are encouraged to reflect on what they did well and how they can continue doing it. The more often employees are recognized for their efforts and given opportunities to grow through feedback, the more likely they are to see a positive impact on their performance and, therefore, on their company.

Starting Your Employee Recognition Program

Employees can feel the sincerity of the recognition given to them, and they take notice of superficial words or gestures, which can potentially diminish the entire significance of recognition. As such, simply telling people they did a good job does not particularly serve any purpose. Instead, it is better to mention the specific action taken, your reaction, and its positive effect on fellow team members and the organization.

These factors must be taken into consideration when starting your recognition program. To ensure its effectiveness, you can also take the initiative to ask your employees what they value most, either in person or through an anonymous survey.

However, keep in mind that recognition doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming because, with just a little effort, you can make everyone feel valued at work without spending much money or resources. Here are some simple ways that businesses can implement employee recognition programs:

  1. Recognize Employees On Their Birthdays

Birthdays are an excellent opportunity to appreciate and recognize employees for their contributions, and simply sending a birthday greeting card carrying the company's logo can make them feel special. This straightforward acknowledgment can profoundly impact employees’ morale because it reinforces their feeling of being valued by the management.

2. Acknowledge Years Of Service

With the high turnover rates nowadays, having workers willing to stick with you through rough times is rare and must be shown proper appreciation. One way of honoring an employee's years of service is by awarding recognition plaques with clear, accurate information, including a personalized message highlighting his unique achievements. You can make it even more special by presenting the plaque at special events such as anniversary milestones to amplify the recognition, motivating other employees, and symbolizing the company's appreciation of the individual's contributions.

3. Send A Congratulatory Email During The Holidays

Sending congratulatory emails during holidays is a powerful employee recognition tool because such heartfelt messages can boost team morale, especially when acknowledging their diligence and contributions. Adding a personal touch, such as including family photos or videos and recognizing personal milestones in your email, can make employees feel noticed and valued beyond their professional contributions, so try to incorporate these elements into recognition practices to strengthen relationships and create a positive work environment.

4. Highlight The Contributions Of Top Performers

When recognizing top performers, the timing and distribution are both crucial. Acknowledging significant achievements like sales targets or problem resolution should ideally be done monthly or quarterly to show appreciation. Aside from encouraging the awardees, such gestures can boost morale while demonstrating that the organization values high performers and their positive contributions to the company.

5. Hold An Annual Dinner To Acknowledge Everyone’s Hard Work And Achievements

Beyond occasional thanks, it's crucial to appreciate employees with creative gestures such as dinner outings to acknowledge their contributions and achievements. An annual dinner event allows employees to relax and bond while also helping them to reflect on the past year. Such activities reward exceptional work while showing appreciation for consistent hard work, making employees feel genuinely appreciated and motivating them for future tasks.

Digital marketing is, as the word suggests, the use of digital media to market products. There are multiple websites where people can buy products. This applies to products such as clothes, technical tools, groceries, medicines, food, and so much more. So much so that one doesn’t have to leave the house if one doesn’t want to
